Astros’ Colton Gordon Sees First Action in Team Israel Uniform

Astros Prospect Colton Gordon with Team Israel for the World Baseball Classic

After one appearance for the Houston Astros in the Grapefruit League, Colton Gordon packed his bags and traveled south. The left-handed pitching prospect received praise in rankings this offseason, following his first professional action post Tommy John surgery.

Joining Team Israel on Monday in preparation for the World Baseball Classic, Gordon started an exhibition game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday. After surrendering a lead-off double to Jon Berti and a single to Jazz Chisholm Jr., Gordon didn’t receive much support in the field.

Shortstop Ty Kelly committed back-to-back fielding errors, bringing home Berti in the process. Gordon shook off the faults, striking out Avisaíl García before inducing a double play to end the frame. And after one inning of work, the lefty’s day ended, throwing 13 of his 17 pitches for strikes.

Gordon is scheduled to start either the second or the third game for Team Israel in Pool D of the World Baseball Classic. The nation will face Team Puerto Rico on Monday and Team Dominican Republic on Tuesday at LoanDepot Park in Miami.
