Astros Minor League Notes: Week Eleven

Another week of baseball is in the books. Let’s look at some news and notes. I will start with a few players who have been hot in the Astros system!

Who’s hot?

Enmanuel Valdez – Valdez has been on this list almost every week and this last week was no different. He hit .364 with 4 HR, 9 RBI including a 3 HR game. The lefty hitting infielder is hitting .357 with 1.143 OPS this season. He is making it hard for Houston to keep him down.

Luke Berryhill – Berryhill has been getting on base consistently but has seen the hits fall more often over the last few weeks. This week he hit .370 with 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI bringing him up to .281 with .871 OPS. He may not be in Double-A much longer.

Quincy Hamilton – Hamilton hit well to get a promotion to High-A and hasn’t stopped hitting there. The lefty swinging outfielder hit .346 with 2 2B, HR, 5 RBI and 3 SB this week. He is hitting .344 with a 951 OPS in 22 games in High-A.

Luis Santana – Santana was acquired in the deal that sent J.D. Davis to the Mets. The 5’9″ infielder got off to a slow start but turned things around this week hitting .346 with 2 2B, HR, 8 RBI. He is still only 22 years old.

Sugar Land Space Cowboys

The Space Cowboys had a good week going 4-2, putting them at 28-38 overall this season. Jonathan Bermudez has struggled this season but had a good start this week allowing 2 runs over 6 innings. Brett Conine turned in a nice outing took. The bullpen continues to be great. Ronel Blanco has a 1.59 ERA and 24 K in 17 innings. Enoli Paredes has a 1.00 ERA with 38 K in 27 innings. Hunter Brown continues to rack up the strikeouts, though he did allow some runs in his outing. He has 80 K in 56 innings this season. Overall the team has a 4.83 ERA.

The offense had a few good performances. Enmanuel Valdez led the way hitting .364 with 4 HR, 9 RBI in 5 games this week. He is hitting .357 with 17 HR in 54 games this season. Korey Lee has struggled a bit this season but connected on a 3 run HR this week, giving him 9 HR for the season. Corey Julks hit another HR, he now has 15 this season. Despite the lower BA, Leon still has a .806 OPS with 17 2B, 9 HR, 19 SB this season. Overall the team has a .749 OPS. The Space Cowboys are back in action tonight at 7:05 CT.

Corpus Christi Hooks

The Hooks also had a good week also going 4-2, putting them at 28-35 this season. Misael Tamarez went 4 innings allowing 1 run in his one appearance. He has 53 K in 46 innings. Devin Conn continues to be solid in relief posting a 2.41 ERA in 23 appearances. Jaime Melendez turned in another good outing and has now allowed just 1 earned run over his last 17 innings. Matt Ruppenthal has really racked up the strikeouts this season striking out 50 in 32 innings in relief. The staff ERA is down to 5.76 ERA.

The offense found some pop this week. Luke Berryhill continued his on base streak hitting .370 this week and now has a .409 OBP this season. Yainer Diaz hit .278 but had 2 HRs bringing his OPS up to .871. Justin Dirden had another good week hitting .300 with 3 2B, 3B, 2 HR. He has a 940 OPS this season. Will Wagner connected on a game winning 2 run HR, his first HR in Double-A. Edwin Diaz also had a big week hitting 3 HR and 7 RBI in 5 games. The Hooks are back at it today at 6:35 CT.

Asheville Tourists

Asheville went 2-4 this week putting them at 24-38 overall. It was a rough week for the pitching. Spencer Arrighetti and Chayce McDermott continue to rack up the strikeouts despite a rough outing this week. Chayce has 76 K in 50.1 innings and Spencer has 80 in 53 innings. Overall the ERA went from 6.56 to 7.02 this week.

The offense got some decent performances. Cristian Gonzalez played in two games and drove in 11 runs including a 2 HR, 9 RBI performance. J.C. Correa continues to hit going 9-for-17 this week (.368 BA). He is hitting .308 with .368 OBP this season. Quincy Hamilton has destroyed High-A pitching since his promotion and this week was no different as he hit .346 in 6 games. Luis Guerrero had a solid week as well hitting 3 HR and driving in 7 runs. Luis Santana hit .346 with 8 RBI this week. The team has an overall OPS of .772 this season.  The Tourists start a new series today at 5:30 PM CT.

Fayetteville Woodpeckers

The Woodpeckers were solid this week going 3-3 putting them at 30-32 overall. The pitching was great again. Edinson Batista had a great outing tossing 6 scoreless innings. He has a 2.58 ERA this season. Bryant Salgado had a good start allowing 1 earned run over 5 innings. Miguel Ullola had another good outing striking out 6 over 3 innings. He has a 1.82 ERA with 38 K in 24.2 innings. Deylen Miley leads the staff with 55 K.  Nic Swanson set a new career high in strikeouts with 9 over 4 scoreless innings this week, Another 20 year old, Carlos Calderon, allowed 1 run over 4.1 innings in his outing. The staff ERA is down to 4.12.

The offense was a bit down this week. Tyler Whitaker was solid hitting .353 in 5 games. Rainier Rivas hit .357 going 5-for-14 in 4 games. Victor Mascai continues to fly under the radar. This week he lefty hit .313 with 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI. Despite hitting just .223, he has a .803 OPS on the season. The Woodpeckers are back tonight at it at 6:05 CT.
