Astros Minor League Notes: Week Four

Another week of baseball is in the books. Let’s look at some news and notes. I will start by listing a few players who have been hot over the last week.

Who’s hot?

David Hensley – The 26th round pick from 2018, Hensley, had a monster week. He hit .264 with 2 2B, 3B, HR, 2 RBI for the Space Cowboys. On the season he is slashing .303/.438/.474 with 7 XBH and 18 walks in 22 games. He continues to prove his worth and up his value.

Pedro Leon – Leon has been swinging it well this season but the numbers didn’t back it up. That changed this week. In 6 games for the Space Cowboys he hit .333 with 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI and 4 SB. His overall numbers are turning around and he is showing why he got such a high bonus.

Enmanuel Valdez – Valdez has been great all season and this week was no different. He hit .300 with 2 HR, 8 RBI in 6 games for the Hooks. Overall he is hitting .344 with a 1.099 OPS and 10 XBHs in Double-A. A great start to the 2022 season for the lefty shining Valdez.

Sugar Land Space Cowboys

The Space Cowboys had a decent week going 3-3 and bringing their overall record to 10-14. Hunter Brown continues to lead the way on the staff with a 3.00 ERA and 26 K in 18 innings this season. Peter Solomon has been good as well posting a 3.93 ERA in 4 starts this season. J.P. France has 25 K in 16.2 innings despite walking a few too many. Overall, the staff has a 4.34 ERA with 248 K in 213.2 innings.

The offense got some things going this week led by Pedro Leon, who I mentioned up top, has 8 stolen bases this season. Korey Lee connected on a couple HRs and has a .729 OPS with 4 HR, 13 Rbi in 21 games. David Hensley continues to have success leading the Space Cowboys with a .911 OPS. The Space Cowboys look to extend their hot stretch tonight at 6:05 CT.

Corpus Christi Hooks

The Hooks are currently at 9-12 after going 3-3 again this week. Jimmy Endersby has had a great start to the season posting a 1.31 ERA over 20.2 innings. Misael Tamarez has struggled a bit with his command but does have 16 K in 14.1 innings while allowing just 7 hits. Nick Hernandez has been dominant in relief striking out 8 over 4.1 scoreless innings. Despite some rough outings, Melendez has 20 K in 15.1 innings. Angel Macuare had a good outing going 5.1 innings striking out 5. The staff as a whole has a 5.24 ERA.

On offense, the Hooks were led by Enmanuel Valdez, as they have been all season to this point. Yainer Diaz put together another good week hitting .286 with 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI in 5 games. Wilyer Abreu has drawn 20 walks in 20 games this season and Shay Whitcomb has a .783 OPS this season. The offense overall is hitting .233. The Hooks are back in action at 6:35 CT tonight.

Asheville Tourists

Asheville has their best week going 2-4 this week bringing them to 4-17 on the season. Chaidez has led the way on the pitching staff posting a 2.45 ERA with 4 BB/27 K in 18.1 innings. Spencer Arrighetti has been strong too striking out 20 over 16.2 innings with a 2.70 ERA. Derek West has been money in relief striking out 15 in 7 innings this season. Chayce McDermott has 27 K in 18 innings this season. Overall the staff has a 6.56 ERA.

The offense has been led by Nerio Rodriguez who is tied for the team lead with 4 HR, tied with Jordan Brewer and Zach Daniels. Will Wagner has cooled off a bit but still has a .915 OPS in 19 games this season. Michael Sandle is hitting .288 with a .821 OPS and a team leading 7 doubles this season. Overall the offense is hitting just .211. The Tourists are back at it today at 10:00 AM CT with Cesar Gomez on the mound.

Fayetteville Woodpeckers

The Woodpeckers were solid this week going 3-3 again pitting them at 8-13 on the season. Deylen Miley had a great start striking out 7 over 5 scoreless. Carlos Calderon had another good outing striking out 5 over 5 innings (3.52 ERA this season). Franny Cobos struck out 9 over 4 perfect in relief this week. Jose Betances has 19 K in 10.1 innings. Edinson Batista has a 2.79 ERA in 9.1 innings. The staff overall has a 5.14 ERA.

The offense has been up and down but saw some good performances this week. Victor Mascai leads the team in OPS with a .918 OPS in 15 games. Joey Loperfido is hitting .279 in 18 games and Cody Orr is leading the team with a .291 BA. Quincy Hamilton leads the team with 12 RBI and also has 6 SB. The Woodpeckers are back at it at 6:05 CT.
