Astros Prospect Stock Report 2021: Volume 2

Just like the stock market, prospects’ stock will go up and down throughout the season. Here is the Astros Prospect Stock Report: Volume 2.

Disclaimer – Being on the stock down part of this list does not necessarily mean the player is a bad prospect. More just noting the rough patch they are experiencing this season.

Previous Stock Reports:

Volume 1

⇑ Stock Up ⇑

Hitter – Joe Perez

Former second round pick Joe Perez got off to a rough start in his career with injuries but he has been destroying the ball in 2021. He started in Low A and hit .300 with 2 HR, 8 RBI in 12 games before being promoted to High A. There he has hit .333 with 7 2B, 5 HR in 16 games. Perez stock is rising fast as he is just 21 years old and showing off with the bat.

2021 Stats: 28 G, .319 BA/.389 OBP/.602 SLG, 11 2B, 7 HR, 24 RBI, 1 SB, 174 wRC+

Pitcher – Jaime Melendez

Melendez was an unknown coming into 2021 but he is on the rise now. The 5’8″ 19 year old absolutely dominated Low A going 18.1 innings allowing just 7 hits and 1 run. Even more impressive was his 5 BB/38 K (18.7 K/9!). He has been promoted to High A and in his first outing he tossed 4 scoreless with 3 strikeouts. He may be small, but his stock is rising quick.

2021 Stats: 7 G, 0.81 ERA, 22.1 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 41 K, 16.5 K/9

Hitter – Zach Daniels

Daniels was drafted by the Astros in the 4th round of the 2020 draft, after a shortened college season. He started off the season showing some of his tools but it has been a struggle of late as he is hitting just .195 overall. The strikeouts have been a problem with 39 over them in 23 games and a 39.4 K%. He does have 3 HR and 5 SB, but over his last 12 games he has 21 K and a .358 OPS.

2021 Stats: 23 G, .195 BA/.293 OBP/.322 SLG, 2 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 79 wRC+

Pitcher – Jayson Schroeder

Schroeder was the Astros 2nd round pick back in 2018 and he has yet to put it together. This year at 21 he is pitching in Fayetteville but it’s been a struggle. In 19 innings he has allowed 12 hits, but has walked 25 to 22 strikeouts. Overall he has a 8.53 ERA and a 7.13 FIP. He is still young, but has yet to find success in the minors.

2021 Stats: 7 G, 8.53 ERA, 19.0 IP, 12 H, 18 ER, 25 BB, 22 K
