Houston Astros MiLB Players Of The Month: June

Let’s take a look at the best performances in the Astros system in June.

*Just a note, these are my picks for the month*

Previous POTM:

April

May

AAA: Round Rock Express

HITTER: Drew Ferguson, OF

  • June Stats: 27 G, .388 BA/.479 OBP/.561 SLG, 7 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 8 SB

Ferguson has had an interesting couple of months. He was selected by the Giants in the Rule 5 Draft this last off-season but was later returned. He has bounced back and had a big June hitting .388 and showing off his power/speed combo with 11 XBH and 8 SB.

Honorable Mention: Taylor Jones, 1B (25 G, .373 BA, 3 HR, 14 RBI)

PITCHER: Jose Urquidy, RHP

  • June Stats: 5 G, 1.84 ERA, 29.1 IP, 18 H, 6 ER, 9 BB, 37 SO

Urquidy, formally known as Hernandez, was an up and comer in 2016 before having TJS. He came back last year a bit but has shown his ability in 2019. He was promoted to AAA and dominating the PCL. In June he had 37 K in 29.1 innings with a 1.84 ERA.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

HITTER: Ronnie Dawson, OF

  • June Stats: 17 G, .234 BA/.347 OBP/.516 SLG, 3 2B, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 3 SB

Rough month offensively for the Hooks but Dawson found his power struck. He missed some time and has struggled this year a bit, but he had a .863 OPS in June and hit 5 HR and stole 3 bases.

PITCHER: Brandon Bailey, RHP

  • June Stats: 4 G, 0.00 ERA, 17.2 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 21 SO, .140 BAA

Bailey was solid in April, really struggled in May, but was absolutely dominant in June. He went 17.2 innings without allowing an earned run and had 2 BB/21 K in 17.2 innings. He could see AAA soon if he keeps this up.

Honorable Mention: Cristian Javier, RHP (2.08 ERA, 30.1 IP, 12 BB/40 K)

A+: Fayetteville Woodpeckers

HITTER: Chandler Taylor, OF

  • June Stats: 20 G, .281 BA/.420 OBP/.531 SLG, 5 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 5 SB

June wasn’t a great month offensively for the Woodpeckers but Taylor was a bright spot. He finished with a .951 OPS and 9 XBH and 5 SB in 20 games. He also had a very nice 19.8 BB% in June.

PITCHER: Luis Garcia, RHP

  • June Stats: 4 G, 0.98 ERA, 18.1 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 8 BB, 28 K, .148 BAA

Garcia has made his name known so far in 2019. After pitching well in Quad Cities, he was promoted to Fayetteville and his numbers got even better. The 22 year old righty struck out 28 in 18.1 innings while posting a 0.98 ERA in June.

Honorable Mention: Shawn Dubin, RHP (1.67 ERA, 27.0 IP, 7 BB/37 K)

A: Quad Cities River Bandits

HITTER: Ross Adolph, OF

  • June Stats: 22 G, .325 BA/.409 OBP/.588 SLG, 7 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 4 SB

Adolph got off to an extremely slow start but he showed what he could do in June. He is up to .222 now but was hitting .163 on June 1st. He showed his power with the 12 XBH and he also stole 4 bases. Hopefully he keeps this up.

PITCHER: Cody Deason, RHP

  • June Stats: 4 G, 1.16 ERA, 23.1 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 6 BB, 23 K, .130 BAA

Deason was a 5th round pick by the Astros last year. This season he has a 3.36 ERA but was even better in June posting a 1.16 ERA with 23 K in 23.1 innings. He held opponents to just a .130 BAA.
