Astros Prospect Report: Yordan Alvarez
The Astros have a budding star down in Corpus Christi who is just 20 years old and built like a monster. Here is some information on the next slugger coming up in the Astros system.
DOB: June 27th, 1997 (20 years old)
Birthplace: Las Tunas, Cuba
Bats: L Throws: R
HT: 6’5 WT: 225
Date seen: 04/14/2018….. Yordan Alvarez is a 6’5 225 pound corner outfielder. Originally signed by the Dodgers for $2 million in July of 2016, he was quickly traded to the Astros for Josh Fields. Athletically, Alvarez is average to slightly below. He is very broad through the shoulders and mid section, but not overweight. The lower half is high waisted and tapers to the ankles and appears to be every bit of his listed measurables.
On this night, Alvarez appeared very comfortable in three left on left at bats. He displayed a compact stroke for a physical middle of the order hitter. A slight loop in the approach angle makes the pitch up in the zone a struggle. There is present power in his swing, but he also displays good bat to ball skills and strike zone awareness. Alvarez stays balanced in the box and rarely gets off a swing that isn’t his best.
Defensively, there is enough arm to stay in a corner outfield position. In the fifth inning vs. Northwest Arkansas, he showed carry on a throw to the plate and a quick enough release. Although not a plus athlete, he shows enough instinct in the outfield to be at worst an average left fielder.
Again, despite his lack of elite athleticism, Alvarez got off the mark well on a ball in the dirt in the 7th inning and ended up scoring a run, also. Listed on most Astros top prospect lists, Alvarez could provide some left handed pop from an outfield position without unreasonable strikeout potential. His current career slash line of .280/.368/.500 makes him, at minimum, worthy of his top prospect billing.
