Houston Astros Minor League Recap: August 24th

Another night of Astros minor league play is in the books. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (68-63) won 1-0 (BOX SCORE)

It took a great pitching performance but Fresno finally broke their losing streak. Valdez got the start for Fresno last night and was flat out dominant. He tossed 8 shutout innings striking out 12 batters. Fresno got on the board in the 2nd inning with an RBI single from Fisher. That was the only run they would get but it would be enough. Hoyt came onto pitch the 9th and struck out the side picking u his 29th save. Valdez is now 12-1 with a 3.08 ERA and 13 BB/111 K in 131.1 innings.

  • Cesar Valdez, RHP: 8.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 12 K (WIN)
  • James Hoyt, RHP: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K (SAVE)

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (77-51) won 4-1 (BOX SCORE)

Strong pitching performance carries the Hooks to the win. Sneed was on the mound for the Hooks and pitched very well. He went 6.2 innings allowing just 1 run with 4 strikeouts. He has allowed just 1 run over his last two starts (13.2 innings). Corpus got the scoring started with 2 runs in the 3rd inning thanks to a sac fly from Tucker and a Davis RBI double. Laureano added an RBI double in the 5th to make it a 3-1 game. The Hooks would get one more in the 7th on a Gregor RBI double. Comer tossed the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run picking up his first save in AA.

  • Cy Sneed, RHP: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K (WIN)
  • Kevin Comer, RHP: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K (SAVE)

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (71-56) PLAYED DOUBLE HEADER

GAME 1 – lost 14-4 (BOX SCORE)

Lancaster fell in game one last night. Bostick got the start but the game got out of hand quick as he allowed 8 runs in 5 innings. Lancaster got 2 runs backs on a 2 run HR from Ritchie. Unfortunately, the bullpen didn’t fare much better as High Desert added 6 more runs. Tucker added a 2 run HR in the 7th, his first in High-A, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 14-4.

GAME 2 – won 2-0 (BOX SCORE)

Lancaster was able to salvage a split of the double header with a win in game two. Hernandez started for Lancaster and pitched a complete game shutout (7 innings) with 6 strikeouts. Lancaster only had four hits but got a solo HR from Muniz in the 2nd and a solo HR from Sewald in the 3rd to give them a 2-0. This was more than enough for Hernandez.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (58-70) lost 3-0 (BOX SCORE)

Another rough night for the Quad Cities offense as they only got two hits on the night. Both hits were doubles but they were unable to push across a run. Valdez pitched well though going 6 innings allowing 2 runs with 6 strikeouts. Schmidt pitched the final two innings allowing just 1 run.
