Houston Astros Minor League Recap: July 14th

Another night of Astros minor league play is in the books. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (47-42) won 6-2 (BOX SCORE)

Fresno starts the post All-Star break schedule off right. Valdez got the start for the Grizzlies and once again was very good. He went 7 innings allowing just 1 run lowering his ERA to 3.19. Fresno got their scoring started in the first with a White RBI single. They would get another 2 runs in the 3rd inning on a White 2 run HR, his 7th HR in AAA. In the 4th Singleton added an RBI double to extend the lead. Singleton would later hit a solo HR, his 15th of the season. Teoscar capped the scoring with a sac fly in the 7th inning. Gustave tossed a scoreless 8th and Guduan struck out the side in the 9th to seal it.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (58-32) lost 10-1 (BOX SCORE)

The score doesn’t fully tell the story as this one was closer than it indicates. Martes started for the Hooks and allowed 2 runs over 6.1 innings with 7 strikeouts. All three runs came in the 3rd inning. Unfortunately the bats had a rough night. Corpus was able to get on the board with a solo HR from Davis in the 6th but that is all they would get. The score stayed 3-1 until Frisco put up 7 runs in the 9th inning.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (48-42)

GAME 1 – won 3-0 (BOX SCORE)

Great first game for the Jethawks. Thornton was on the mound and finished tossing a complete game shutout (7 innings) with 4 strikeouts. Lancaster got on the board in the 5th with an RBI double from Marlow. They would add another 2 runs in the 7th on a 2 run HR from Laureano, his 7th of the season. The 3 runs were plenty for Thornton as he dominated San Jose.

GAME 2 – won 9-4 (BOX SCORE)

Lancaster finished off the sweep of the double header with a nice win. They scored early and made this one a blowout fast. Lancaster scored 3 runs in the first inning on Muniz and Ferguson RBI singles and a 3rd run scoring on a wild pitch. They added 3 more in the 2nd inning on a 2 run HR from Laureano and a solo HR from Muniz. The runs kept coming in the 3rd with a Wik 2 run triple. Laureano tripled in the 4th and came around to score on a Muniz RBI single. At this point they Jethawks were up 9-0. San Jose battled getting four off of Armenteros, but he still managed to go 5 innings and struck out 7. McCanna closed the game with two scoreless innings.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (42-48) won 4-2 (BOX SCORE)

Bower was on the mound for the River Bandits last night and had a great outing. He went 7 innings allowing just 2 earned runs with 0 BB/8 K. Quad Cities got on the board in the 2nd inning on a Roa solo HR, his 2nd of the season. Hermelyn later in the inning added an RBI single to make it 2-0. Goedert added another run in the 8th with an RBI single. Ferrell and Garza combined to throw 2 scoreless innings to close out the game.

A-: Tri-City ValleyCats (14-13) won 2-0 (BOX SCORE

Good pitching and one bit hit lifts the ValleyCats to the win. Perez got the start and went 4.1 innings allowing just 2 hits, no runs, with 5 strikeouts. Brey finished off the 5th keeping the score tied 0-0. The game would stay 0-0 into the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, Astros 2nd round pick Dawson, hit a 2 run HR to give Tri-City the lead. Chavez pitched the final four innings without giving up a run and Tri-City hung on for the 2-0 victory.
