Houston Astros MiLB Week in Review

Another week of Astros minor league baseball is in the books.  Let’s take a look at the best performances this past week.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (22-27) went 5-2 this week.

  • Danny Worth, SS: .429 BA (9-for-21), 7 R, 2B, HR, 8 RBI
  • Matt Duffy, 3B: .310 BA (9-for-29), 6 R, 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 10 RBI
  • Jon Kemmer, OF: .320 BA (8-for-25), 6 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, SB
  • Jon Singleton, 1B: .263 BA (5-for-19), 8 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 8 BB/4 SO
  • Andrew Aplin, OF: .292 BA (7-for-24), 7 R, 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB
  • AJ Reed, 1B: .300 BA (6-for-20), 2 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI
  • Preston Tucker, OF: .259 BA (7-for-27), 5 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI

Strong week for Fresno going 5-2. Worth had been great and continued hitting this week. He is not hitting .353 with 20 extra base hits in 42 games. Really nice to see Duffy turn it around. The reigning PCL MVP got off to a rough start but had a big week with the 3 HR. Kemmer was a breakout prospect last season and started slow but has picked it up recently. Singleton is still struggling to hit for average but is driving in runs and drawing walks. I’m sure he will get another chance eventually. AJ Reed returned from his hamstring injury and had a solid week with 3 doubles.

Musgrove has continued to dominate everywhere he goes. In AAA he has a 2.00 ERA with 2 BB/19 K in 18 innings. Overall he has a 1.02 ERA in 44.1 innings. Rodgers has been solid this season and has a 3.64 ERA with 8 BB/50 K in 54 innings. Jankowski’s ERA is high for a reliever but he has struck out 43 in 27.2 innings this season. There isn’t much else to say about Hoyt that hasn’t already been said. He has a 1.88 ERA with 7 BB/39 K in 24 innings to go along with 10 saves.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (29-20) went 4-3 this week.

Bregman just keeps hitting. Now hitting .326 with 12 HR, 20 BB/13 SO on the season. Fisher has put together a solid season so far .269 with 10 HR. This is an important season for him with openings in the outfield coming up soon. Teoscar has made some adjustments this year and they have paid off. On the season he is hitting .277 with .355 OBP and 16 stolen bases. Davis only hit .200 this week but still managed to hit 2 HR giving him 9 on the season.

Sneed has continued to impress this season. With another solid start he now has a 3.41 ERA with 9 BB/40 SO in 34.1 innings. Paulino has definitely risen his stock this season. He has done a good job limiting the walks while maintaining a good strikeout rate. He now has a 2.03 ERA on the season. Grills has now made 4 outings for Corpus and has allowed just 2 earned runs in the 20 innings. Emanuel made his first start in nearly 13 months returning from TJS and was great allowing just 1 run in 5 innings.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (23-25) went 4-3 this week.

  • Ramon Laureano, OF: .259 BA (7-for-27), 8 R, 2B, HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB
  • Bryan Muniz, 1B: .381 BA (8-for-21), 5 R, 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI
  • Bobby Boyd, OF: .318 BA (7-for-22), 6 R, 4 2B, 3B, HR, 10 RBI, 4 SB
  • Garrett Stubbs, C: .400 BA (8-for-20), 4 R, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI, SB
  • Jason Martin, OF: .560 BA (14-for-25), 8 R, 2 2B, 4 HR, 12 RBI
  • Antonio Nunez, SS: .333 BA (6-for-18), 7 R, 2B, 3B

Laureano finally got his first HR of the season this week. He has a .283 BA with .415 OBP this season. Muniz has heated up recently bringing his season average up to .273. While Boyd doesn’t walk much, he gets on bases and steals bases. In 31 games this season he has 22 stolen bases. Stubbs has vaulted himself into conversation as the top catching prospect in the system. He is a great defender and the bat has come around .292 with 5 HR, 17 BB/18 SO in 30 games. Martin was a breakout candidate of mine and he has been on fire. He hit .560 this week bringing his season average to .291 with 7 HR in 39 games.

Dykxhoorn has well pitching in the difficult Cal League. His season ERA is down to 3.03 with only 7 BB in 38.2 innings. Nice to see Deetz have a great start. He now owns a 3.83 ERA with 32 K in 40 innings. James continues to pitch well. He has 44 K in 36.1 IP with a 2.97 ERA in a very tough league to pitch in. Deemes just keeps on pitching well. 0.96 ERA in Lancaster and 0.90 ERA overall. Dorris has 20 K in just 11.1 innings for Lancaster/

A: Quad Cities Riverbandits (22-27) went 4-3 this week.

Tucker only hit .190 this week but still finds a way to contribute with 3 RBI and 3 SB. He now has 22 SB in 46 games. McCall has really heated up and with another solid week he brought his average to .285. Michelena hasn’t been on the team long but .458 in the 7 games he has played in. Ballard is also a new addition to the River Bandits and he has helped boost their offense with a nice week. He has 7 BB/4 SO in 10 games. Goedert is only hitting .223 but has 20 RBI in 30 games.

Abreu had his best start of the season and was one out away from completing the 7 inning game. More importantly though is the 1 BB/8 K in 6.2 innings. He has struck out 54 in 34.2 innings. Person has really pitched well and now has a 1.69 ERA with 22 K in 21.1 innings. One of the high potential pitching prospects, Perez, had a solid outing. He is only 18 years old in full season ball.

LINE OF THE WEEK:

Joe Musgrove, RHP, 05/25/16: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

Jason Martin, OF, 05/26/16: 5-for-5, 4 R, HR, RBI, BB
