Houston Astros Minor League Recap: May 23rd

All four teams in the Astros system were in action with two winning and two losing. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (18-25) won 8-7 (BOX SCORE)

Huge comeback win for the Grizzlies last night. Shirley got the start and allowed 6 earned runs in just 3.1 innings. Fresno jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a Singleton solo HR in the first inning. They ended up entering the bottom of the 6th down 7-1, and this is where the comeback started. Fresno scored two with an RBI double from Singleton and an RBI single from Duffy. Fresno would add four more in the 7th with an RBI double from Aplin and a 3 run HR for Singleton to tie the game at 7. Fresno’s bullpen combination of Chapman, Gustave, and Hoyt tossed three shutout innings to get the game to the 9th tied. In the bottom of the 9th, Kemmer came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and delivered an RBI single to win the game.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (26-17) won 11-7 (BOX SCORE)

Corpus Christi also won a thriller last night. Corpus got the scoring started in the first with a Fisher RBI single scoring Hernandez. Martes got the start but had trouble with his command walking three in the first and getting pulled after just 0.2 innings. Midland would score 6 runs and Corpus would enter the 7th inning down 6-1. In the 7th inning Bregman hit a 2 run HR, his 11th HR of the season. Corpus entered the top of the 8th down 7-3 and put together a huge rally. Pena reached on an error scoring a run and loading the bases for Teoscar with two outs. Teoscar came through with a bases clearing double to tie the game at 7. The game would stay tied until the top of the 10th. Teoscar had another RBI double in the 10th to take the lead and Davis and Gregor would add RBI singles to score 4 in the 10th. West closed the game out with two scoreless innings.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (19-23) lost 8-3 (BOX SCORE)

Back to back losses for Lancaster as they lose this one late. Lancaster jumped out to a 3-0 lead with an RBI triple from Boyd and an RBI double from Stubbs. Muniz added a sacrifice fly for the third run of the game. Thornton started great giving up just 1 run in the first 5 innings but ended giving up 2 runs in the 6th inning. It was a 3-3 game going to the 8th inning when Thompson gave up five runs. On the bright side, Deemes pitched another scoreless inning keeping his High-A ERA at 0.00.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (18-25) lost 5-4 (BOX SCORE)

Quad Cities comeback falls short. Murphy got the start and gave up 4 earned runs in 3.2 innings. Quad Cities would rally for two in the 5th with an RBI triple from Mizell and an RBI single from Duarte. The River Bandits would add two more in the 6th to tie the game with a 2 run HR from Goedert. The game would stay tied until the 9th when Cedar Rapids was able to walk it off on a walk-off HR.
