Houston Astros Minor League Recap: April 14th

Some high profile pitching prospects on the mound last night for the Astros minor league teams. Unfortunately only one of them really pitched well. Check out how the prospects performed in the games from last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (3-3) lost 10-9 (BOX SCORE)

Fresno lost a tough one last night. AJ Reed had three hits including a 2 run HR in the first inning. Unfortunately Michael Feliz had a rough start and put Fresno in a deep hole. Moran got Fresno back in the game with a grand slam in the 3rd inning but Salt Lake took the lead right back. Both Moran and Reed’s homers were the first on the season. Nice to see Jon Singleton have a solid game getting on base three times and not striking out once. Fresno rallied in the ninth for two runs but Jon Kemmer struck out with two guys on to end the game.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (4-3) won 10-5 (BOX SCORE)

Corpus got the night started off right scoring three runs in the first inning off of just one hit. This was more than enough for Joe Musgrove who cruised through his four innings of work. Read more on Musgrove’s start here: Prospect Report Joe Musgrove. Corpus was able to play add on in the middle innings with two RBI basehits from Fisher, a 2 run HR for Mayfield, and a 2 run double for Davis. Alex Bregman is now hitting .333 through the first 7 games. Jack Mayfield is off to a 7-for-13 start to the season. Flame throwing lefty, Reymin Guduan, came in and closed the door to seal the win for the Hooks.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (2-3) lost 8-4 (BOX SCORE)

Elieser Hernandez made his season and Lancaster debut but it did not go as planned. He was roughed up for nine hits and four runs in just four innings. Lancaster battled and built a comeback highlighted by a Jamie Ritchie RBI double and a 2 run single by Kristian Trompiz. High Desert scored three runs in the last two innings which proved insurmountable for Lancaster. Jason Martin is off to a hot start hitting .421. Jamie Ritchie is hitting .333 with 4 BB/4 SO in the early going. To this point Lancaster is only hitting .234 as a team. This should rise.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (2-6) lost 5-2 (BOX SCORE)

Quad Cities started one of the highest potential arms in the Astros system last night in Albert Abreu. It was evident why he has the potential, but is also still a high risk prospect. He struck out two in the first inning and allowed just one run in the first four innings. The 5th inning he was chased from the game and charged with four earned runs. The QC offense wasn’t able to get enough going to overcome the deficit. Duarte put together a nice game with the two extra base hits. He is hitting .391 this season. Six different River Bandits had hits but it wasn’t enough. Jose Hernandez has a nice outing in relief and Jacob Dorris has yet to allow a run in three appearances.

Today’s starters according to MiLB.com:

FRE: Brad Peacock (3.60 ERA)

CC: David Paulino (0.00 ERA)

LAN: TBD

QC: Chris Murphy (4.15 ERA)
